NIST quest for climate-friendly refrigerants finds complicated choices

Researchers at NIST has just completed a multi-year study to identify the “best” candidates for future use of air conditioning refrigerants. The objective is to find the refrigerants that have the lowest impact on climate.

Unfortunately, all 27 fluids NIST identified as the best from a performance viewpoint are at least slightly flammable, which is not allowed under U.S. safety codes for most end uses. Several fluids among the list of refrigerants are highly flammable, including propane, the fuel for outdoor grills.

Andy Pearson receives ASHRAE Award for landmark district heating and cooling system

 

Dr. Andy Pearson is the engineer who led the design of the world’s largest ammonia water source heat pump for a town’s district heating and cooling scheme in Norway.

Dr Andy Pearson, Group Managing Director of Star Refrigeration and Azane Inc, has again been recognized by industry peers for his technically revolutionary high-temperature district heating and cooling system. Pearson was presented with the Award at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Winter Conference 2017 in Las Vegas.

Air Products Bids for China’s Largest Industrial Gas Maker

Allentown, Pa.-based maker of industrial and atmospheric gasses, Air Products & Chemicals Inc. (IW 500/106), has made an offer to buy China’s largest producer of industrial gasses as it seeks to compete with rivals such as Praxair Inc. in an industry marked by a wave of consolidation.

Air Products rolls out the first LNG heat exchanger produced at the company’s newest LNG manufacturing facility in Port Manatee, Fla.

The Allentown, Pa.-based maker of industrial and atmospheric gasses said in a statement on Monday that it expressed preliminary, non-binding interest in acquiring all outstanding shares of  Yingde Gases Group Co., subject to conditions.
