Alliance Letter to Secretary Tillerson

Please note that the attached letter, drafted in consultation with the Alliance board, was submitted to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday, April 25.

This letter builds on the letter sent recently to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, which focused on EPA issues relevant to the Montreal Protocol.  The purpose of this letter is to introduce the Alliance’s current priorities to the Secretary of State, especially in the context of the ongoing federal budget discussions, and to highlight the State Department’s importance to the Montreal Protocol process.

Staff will follow up on both of these letters by discussing their content in further engagement with EPA, the State Department and Congress.

Guus Velders: One of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017

Guus Velders
Dr. Guus Velders was named as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2017.
His citation, whose author is listed as Leonardo DiCaprio, credits him for carrying out important research to build an understanding of climate change.

HFC Phase-Down: New Law In Australia

Please note that the Australian government has introduced legislation to phase down HFCs starting in 2018.

On March 30th 2017, legislation was introduced in the Australian Parliament to begin a domestic phase-down of HFC imports in line with the provisions of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

According to CoolingPost.com, “The Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Amendment Bill 2017 will allow Australia to phase-down HFC imports starting in 2018 and reach an 85% reduction by 2036.”

Tech Watch: Maersk Invests in Carrier’s Natural Refrigerant Container Units

100 NaturaLINE units ordered for operational testing

Technology advancements are progressing at an exponential rate in virtually every industry and the HVAC/R industry has been seeing it’s fair share of “tech”.

The world’s largest container shipping line, Maersk Line, is striving to further reduce the environmental impact of its global shipping operations. They have ordered the first 100 of a total of 200 refrigerated containers to be chilled by Carrier Transicold’s NaturaLINE natural-refrigerant based system.

“To meet our sustainability goals and stay ahead of the new EU legislation, Maersk Line is keen to carefully evaluate all alternatives to the current synthetic refrigerants,” says Ingrid Uppelschoten-Snelderwaard, head of global equipment, Maersk Line. “The NaturaLINE system is an advanced technology with interesting potential for reefers. We chose it after laboratory testing of the unit’s performance with perishable and frozen commodities and look forward to gaining further operational experience with the system.” => Read full article
